Degenerative Disc Disease Q & A

What is degenerative disc disease?

Degenerative disc disease isn’t a disease, but a condition that may develop due to the degenerative changes that affect the structure of your spinal discs as you get older. Each vertebra in your spine is separated by cushion-like discs that act as shock absorbers and supports spinal mobility.

As you get older, your discs may begin to dry out and shrink, affecting the normal structure and function of your spine. Though disc degeneration is common, not everyone experiences the pain that leads to degenerative disc disease.

What are degenerative disc disease symptoms?

Degenerative disc disease symptoms most often affect the neck (cervical spine) or lower back (lumbar spine). The severity of the pain may range from a dull ache to sharp, debilitating pain that makes it impossible for you to manage your daily responsibilities. You may also notice an increase in your pain after sitting for a prolonged period or when bending, twisting, or lifting.

Other symptoms of degenerative disc disease include:

  • Numbness or tingling sensation that radiates to your extremities
  • Periods of severe pain that may last a few days or a few months
  • Leg muscle weakness

If you’re experiencing these symptoms and they’re affecting your quality of life, contact Cell Bionics Institute to schedule an evaluation with Dr. Haider. During your evaluation, Dr. Haider focuses on providing you with a proper diagnosis. Your diagnosis determines the best treatments to optimize pain relief.

How is degenerative disc disease treated?

Dr. Haider develops individualized treatment plans for the management of degenerative disc disease based on the severity of your symptoms, the degree of degeneration, and your current and future health needs. Initially, he may recommend treatments aimed at controlling your pain, such as physical therapy and over-the-counter pain medication. Dr. Haider also offers interventional pain management treatments, such as epidural injections and nerve blocks, to help control pain.

In addition to managing your symptoms, Dr. Haider offers regenerative medicine to support your body’s natural healing process. For your degenerative disc disease, he may recommend his trademarked Biodisc® intradiscal platelet-rich plasma (PRP) injection. PRP is a form of regenerative medicine that contains a high concentration of the healing properties found in your blood, including growth factors and anti-inflammatory agents.

With his Biodisc intradiscal PRP injection, Dr. Haider activates the stem cells in your disc to boost the regeneration process and help heal the disc naturally.
